What makes a great SEO, AEO and GEO platform — and how to tell before you buy
TL;DR
A great SEO, AEO and GEO platform does three things at once: it measures what AI engines actually say about your brand, it joins that to the search and commercial data you already trust, and it converts the gap between them into work someone can ship this week.
Most tools do one of the three. The eight questions at the end are the fastest way we know to tell which kind you are buying — before the contract, not after.
What should an AI-search platform actually measure?
Three families of number are worth paying for; a tool that covers only one quietly becomes a screenshot source rather than a system of record.
- Presence in AI answers. Whether you are mentioned, where you sit inside the answer, and how you are characterised — measured against a fixed prompt set so the numbers trend. The framework is in how to measure AI share of voice.
- Citations. Which URLs get quoted as sources on retrieval-driven surfaces such as Google AI Overviews. That is a keyword-shaped pipeline, not a prompt-shaped one, and it deserves its own tracking.
- Demand and outcome. Impressions, clicks and sessions — plus, for retailers, the feed health underneath product recommendations.
Presence without outcome is vanity. Outcome without presence is blindness to the surface where generative engine optimization is now decided. A platform earns its price by holding both.
Why do SEO and AI visibility belong in one tool?
Because of the only question executives really ask: is any of this working? You cannot answer that by reconciling a mentions CSV by hand against two other dashboards.
We built Search Genie so Google Search Console, GA4, Merchant Center feed diagnostics and AI-answer tracking land in the same warehouse, keyed to the same brand and market. AI visibility sits next to clicks, sessions and revenue in one view, over one date range — the feature set is organised around that join, not around a shelf of separate widgets.
How often should AI answers be checked?
Often enough to tell a real decline from an engine re-rolling the dice. Generative answers vary between runs, so a sparse sample is noise. Our prompt sets run against real engines — ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude — daily on Growth and Enterprise plans and every two days on Starter, with Google AI Overview citations tracked as their own keyword pipeline alongside.
Then ask the harder question: what happens when a run fails? Engines time out, rate-limit and change behaviour without notice. Our answer: failed runs are retried or excluded — never silently recorded as zero mentions. A fabricated zero is worse than a visible gap, because it looks like a crisis and burns a week of somebody’s attention.
What does honest metering look like?
Every plan limit a vendor publishes should be the limit the software enforces. That sounds like a low bar, but pricing copy and enforcement code are maintained by different people and drift in both directions — buyers get sold more than the system allows, or quietly given less than they paid for.
We reconciled ours line by line — prompt allowances, refresh cadence, content credits — so the numbers on the pricing page at $99 / $399 / $1,499 per brand per month are the numbers the platform applies to your account. Ask any vendor to prove the same: pick a figure off their price page and ask where it is enforced.
Does it work in Arabic?
Arabic and English are separate battlefields, not one battlefield with a translation layer bolted on. The same question asked in Arabic returns different brands, different sources and a different competitive set — yet most platforms treat the region as generic localisation, scoring Arabic answers with English extraction logic and producing noise.
We run Arabic prompt sets, Arabic brand-mention extraction and GCC and wider MENA markets — Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, Lebanon — as first-class inputs, not a settings toggle. If your buyers search in Arabic, this is the single largest difference between vendors; the case is in AI search in Arabic.
What happens after the chart?
Dashboards describe problems, and that is where most of the category stops. A gap in your prompt coverage should become a specific recommendation; a recommendation should become a ready-to-edit blog draft or a concrete on-page action, in the brand’s own voice and language. Measurement tells you which questions you lose; the action layer is what lets a small team fix forty of them this quarter.
Can it live inside ChatGPT?
Increasingly your analysts work in an assistant, not a BI tool. Search Genie ships an MCP server with 21 governed, OAuth-secured tools, so you can query your own visibility data from ChatGPT or Claude and get answers grounded in your warehouse rather than the model’s guesses. Access is scoped per key and revocable — the mechanics are in bringing your SEO data into ChatGPT with MCP.
Does the vendor use its own product?
A search platform that search engines cannot read is telling you something. Our marketing site is prerendered so AI crawlers receive full HTML rather than an empty shell; this library is written in the answer-first structure we recommend to customers; and we run a free AI-visibility audit, human-reviewed before it reaches you, so the first thing you see is our real output on your brand.
Eight questions to ask any vendor before you buy
Paste these into your RFP; the answers separate the category quickly.
- Do AI-answer results and my Search Console, analytics and product-feed data live in one store, in a single view?
- Which engines do you query, how often, and is that a live call to the real engine or a cached approximation?
- Do you track Google AI Overview citations separately from assistant mentions?
- When an engine run fails, what does my chart show — a retry, an exclusion, or a zero?
- Point at any limit on your pricing page and show me where the software enforces that exact number.
- If I sell in Arabic, do you run Arabic prompts and Arabic mention extraction — or translate English ones?
- What do I get beyond charts? Walk me from one detected gap to the draft it produces.
- Can I query my own data from the AI tools my team already uses, with access I can revoke?
Where to start
Run the eight questions past everyone on your shortlist, including us. Nobody can promise you a placement in an AI answer — engines are probabilistic and any vendor guaranteeing one is selling something else. What a platform can offer is honest measurement, a real cadence, and a short path from a gap to a fix. To see ours on your own brand, the free audit is the no-commitment version and connecting your AI tools is the five-minute one.
Frequently asked questions
What should an SEO, AEO and GEO platform measure?+
Three families of number: presence in AI answers (mention, rank within the answer, sentiment across a fixed prompt set), citations on retrieval surfaces like Google AI Overviews, and the demand data that says whether any of it moved impressions, clicks, sessions or revenue.
How often should AI answers be checked?+
Often enough to separate a real decline from an engine re-roll — daily is the sensible default for a serious programme, and every couple of days is the practical floor. Anything monthly gives you an anecdote, not a trend line you can act on.
Why does a single data warehouse matter for AI visibility?+
Because the only question executives really ask is whether AI visibility is doing anything for the business. You can answer that only when AI mentions, Search Console clicks, GA4 sessions and feed health share one store, keyed to the same brand and market.
How can I tell if a vendor’s plan limits are real?+
Ask them to point at a published number — prompts, refresh cadence, content credits — and show which part of the software enforces it. Limits that live only in marketing copy tend to drift from the ones the product actually applies to your account.
