What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)? A practical guide for brands

Search Genie team, HYVE Labs··7 min read

TL;DR

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of earning visibility inside AI-generated answers — the responses people get from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews — rather than links on a results page.

The playbook: define your entity clearly, publish answer-shaped content, earn citations and third-party corroboration, and measure what engines say about you the way you once measured rankings.

The front page moved

For twenty years, the unit of search visibility was the blue link. You optimized a page, it ranked, people clicked. That contract is dissolving: a growing share of buying questions — “best specialty coffee brands in Dubai”, “which CRM suits a small agency” — now get a synthesized answer, with a handful of brands named inside it. If your brand isn’t in the answer, there is no position two. You’re simply absent.

GEO is the discipline that treats those answers as the new front page. It is adjacent to SEO — much of the underlying work overlaps — but it optimizes for a different output: not ranking, but being mentioned, ranked well within the answer, and cited as a source.

GEO vs SEO vs AEO — the terms, quickly

  • SEO — earn positions on a search results page. Output: a ranked link.
  • AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) — structure content so machines can lift a direct answer from it: question-shaped headings, first-paragraph answers, FAQ markup.
  • GEO — the umbrella for generative surfaces: getting large language models to mention, recommend and cite your brand. AEO is a tactic inside it; SEO remains the foundation under it.

How engines decide which brands to name

Three mechanisms matter, and each one is influenceable:

  1. Training knowledge. Models absorb what the public web consistently says about you. If your positioning is vague or inconsistent across your site, directories and press, the model’s picture of you is vague too — and vague entities don’t get recommended.
  2. Live retrieval. ChatGPT search, Gemini and AI Overviews fetch pages at answer time and quote or cite them. This is the fastest lever: publish the page that answers the prompt, and you can be in next week’s answers.
  3. Corroboration. Engines lean on third-party signals — reviews, forums, comparison articles — to avoid repeating a brand’s own marketing. A claim that exists only on your website is weak; a claim echoed by two independent sources is quotable.
A first-party lesson: while building Search Genie we asked the major assistants about our own product — and one of them confidently invented a different description of what we do. Engines don’t leave blanks; they fill them. If you don’t define your entity precisely, an LLM will improvise it for you.

The five moves that actually work

1. Write your entity down — everywhere, identically

One canonical sentence for what you are, who you serve, and where you operate. Put it on your homepage, your about page, your LinkedIn, your directory listings and your structured data. Entity consistency is the cheapest GEO win there is — the full playbook is in entity SEO for LLMs.

2. Build a prompt set before you build content

List the 25–100 questions that define your category, per market and per language. That set is your new keyword universe — it’s what you’ll measure against and what your content roadmap should answer; the prompt-tracking guide shows how to build one that stays stable.

3. Publish answer-shaped pages

Question-shaped headings, a direct answer in the first two sentences, structured data, and an FAQ block. Pages built this way get lifted into answers; essays that bury the answer don’t — see the AEO checklist and how LLMs chunk your content.

4. Earn corroboration, not just links

Reviews, community threads and independent comparisons are what answers quote. Classic digital PR, pointed at the sources engines actually cite in your category.

5. Measure share of voice — then iterate

Run your prompt set on a schedule across engines, and track who gets mentioned, at what rank, and who gets cited. Without measurement, GEO is guesswork; with it, it’s a feedback loop. We wrote up the exact framework in how to measure AI share of voice, and the citation half in getting cited in AI Overviews.

Where to start this week

Pick ten buying-intent prompts in your category and ask them on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google. Note who’s named. If your brand is missing from answers your buyers see every day, that gap — not your rank tracker — is your most urgent search problem. That ten-prompt exercise, industrialized across engines, markets and languages, is exactly what Search Genie automates — and the free AI-visibility audit will run the first pass for you.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO different from SEO?+

Yes, in target and tactics. SEO earns a ranking on a results page; GEO earns a mention or citation inside an AI-generated answer. They overlap — strong pages help both — but GEO adds work SEO never needed: entity clarity, answer-shaped content, and measuring what assistants actually say about you.

Which engines should a brand track for GEO?+

Start with the assistants your buyers actually use: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Claude. Track the same prompt set on each — they disagree with each other far more than people expect, and each one is a separate audience.

How long does GEO take to show results?+

Citation-driven surfaces like Google AI Overviews can move in weeks, because they retrieve live pages. Mentions grounded in model training move slower and reward consistency: clear entity descriptions, corroborating third-party coverage, and content that keeps answering the question.

Can you guarantee a brand appears in AI answers?+

No — and you should be suspicious of anyone who says otherwise. Engines are probabilistic and change constantly. What you can do is measure your share of voice, find the prompts you lose, and systematically improve the inputs engines rely on.
