Answer engine optimization (AEO): the 12-point on-page checklist
TL;DR
AEO makes your pages quotable. The checklist below is the on-page pass we run: answer-first paragraphs, question-shaped headings, structure a parser can lift, entity consistency, and markup that matches the visible content.
The 12-point AEO checklist
Answers
- Lead with the answer. Under every question-heading, the first one or two sentences must answer it completely — quotable without the rest of the page.
- Make headings questions people ask. “How much does X cost in Dubai?” beats “Pricing considerations”. Mine the phrasing from support tickets and sales calls.
- One question, one section. Sections that answer three things at once give parsers nothing clean to lift.
- Include the specifics. Numbers, names, steps and dates are what generated answers borrow; generalities are what they skip.
Structure
- Use real HTML structure. Lists for lists, tables for comparisons, h2/h3 hierarchy that mirrors the logic — machine-readable structure is the point, and structuring content for LLMs covers the details.
- Render content in HTML, not behind JavaScript. Many AI crawlers execute no JS. If your answer only exists after hydration, it doesn’t exist for them.
- Add a visible FAQ block. Three to six genuinely asked questions with complete answers, in the DOM — not a widget that loads on click.
- Match markup to visible content. FAQPage and Article structured data on the things the page actually says; markup that diverges from the page erodes trust in both.
Entity and trust
- State your entity identically everywhere. One canonical description of what you are, on every page footer, profile and directory.
- Date your content honestly. Real published/updated dates; engines lean on freshness signals for volatile topics.
- Cite your own sources. Answers built on corroborated claims get borrowed; unsourced superlatives don’t.
- Keep one canonical page per question. Five near-duplicate pages split your chance of being the lifted passage — consolidate and redirect.
How to prioritize AEO work
Don’t rewrite the whole site. Start where an answer surface already exists: keywords that trigger AI Overviews today, prompts where assistants already answer but don’t name you. Those lists come from measurement — AI Overview tracking for the citation gaps, and a tracked prompt set for the mention gaps. Optimize against real gaps and every hour of AEO work has a scoreboard.

Frequently asked questions
What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?+
AEO is structuring content so machines can lift a correct, self-contained answer from it: question-shaped headings, direct first sentences, FAQ blocks and structured data. It is the on-page tactic layer of GEO — the umbrella discipline of earning visibility in AI-generated answers.
Does FAQ schema still matter for AEO?+
Yes, but not for the reason it used to. Google shows FAQ rich results rarely now, yet the markup still hands parsers a clean question-answer structure that generative systems can quote — and it keeps your answers unambiguous, which matters more than the rich-result cosmetics ever did.
How do I know if AEO changes are working?+
Measure the outputs, not the pages: track whether AI Overviews on your keywords start citing the updated pages, and whether assistant answers to your tracked prompts start including you. Page-level tweaks without answer-level measurement is optimization with the scoreboard switched off.
