Entity SEO: define your brand so LLMs stop guessing

TL;DR

Language models don’t leave blanks — an undefined brand gets an improvised one. Entity SEO is writing your identity down so precisely and repeating it so consistently that models stop guessing: one canonical description, everywhere, backed by structured data and corroborating sources.

Why entities decide AI recommendations

When an assistant answers “best options for X in Riyadh”, it isn’t scanning a live index of everything — it’s recalling entities it associates with that category, place and audience, then (sometimes) verifying with retrieval. A brand with a crisp entity footprint gets recalled; a brand the model half-knows gets skipped or, worse, described wrongly with full confidence.

We learned this on ourselves: while building Search Genie we asked the major assistants what our product was — and got back a confident, wrong invention from one of them. That experience shaped our whole GEO playbook: define the entity first, or the model defines it for you.

How to define your brand entity (step by step)

1. Write the canonical sentence

One sentence: what you are, for whom, where. “Search Genie is an AI search intelligence platform by HYVE Labs for brands in the GCC” — category, audience, geography, parent. Every word is a retrieval hook.

2. Repeat it verbatim across your surfaces

Homepage, about page, footer, LinkedIn, directories, app-store listings, press boilerplate. The repetition is the feature: paraphrasing on every surface reads, to a model, like several similar companies.

3. Encode it in structured data

Organization markup with name, url, parent organization and sameAs links to your profiles. It’s the machine-readable spine that ties the mentions together.

4. Earn corroboration

A claim that exists only on your own site is an assertion; the same claim in a directory, a review and an article is a fact a model will repeat. Point digital PR at the sources engines already cite in your category.

5. Audit what models actually say — then re-audit

Ask every engine to describe you, in English and in your other market languages, on a schedule. Track it like a metric, because it is one — it’s step one of the full AI visibility audit. This is the same loop as measuring AI share of voice, pointed at your own name.

Common entity failures we see

  • The rename that never propagated — old name still live across directories, so models mix two identities.
  • Category drift — five different self-descriptions (“platform”, “agency”, “tool”, “suite”, “solution”) and the model picks none.
  • Geography missing — nothing states your markets, so you lose every “in Dubai / in Saudi Arabia” prompt to brands that say it plainly.

Frequently asked questions

What is entity SEO?+

Entity SEO is making sure search engines and language models hold one precise, consistent concept of who you are — your name, category, offering, markets and relationships — rather than a fuzzy cloud of half-signals. For LLMs it's foundational: models recommend entities they understand.

Where do LLMs learn what a brand is?+

From everything public and repeated: your site, directories, LinkedIn, press, reviews, forums and structured data. Consistency across those sources is the signal. If your homepage, your Crunchbase and a review site each describe you differently, the model averages the confusion.

How do I check what AI engines think my brand is?+

Ask them, systematically: prompt each major assistant to describe your company, your products and your competitors, in every market language. Wrong or vague answers are your entity gaps — and re-asking on a schedule tells you whether your fixes are landing.
